The workshop “Integrated foreign language teaching strategies in the tertiary context” was held at Linguistics faculty of BMSTU on June, 6, 2014 by Kira Inozemtseva, the senior lecturer of L2.

 

The priority task of profession-oriented foreign language teaching at a university - to form a professional FL communicative competence of a specialist – can be solved by means of subject-language integration. The scaffolding strategies are to be applied as the facilitation tools of content-oriented FL teaching in a non-linguistic university. The original idea of scaffolding in education belongs to Jerome Bruner, who defines it as a “a process of ‘setting up’ the situation to make the child’s entry easy and successful and then gradually pulling back and handling the role to the child as he becomes skilled enough to manage it”. Tertiary ESP context provides a wide area for implementing scaffolded teaching. The workshop “Integrated foreign language teaching strategies in the tertiary context” was devoted to the description of efficient facilitating techniques (verbal, non-verbal and procedural), that are to maintain sustainable growth of student knowledge both of English and of a subject discipline content.

 

In the end of the workshop a questionnaire was administered among the participants with the aim to confirm teachers’ acquisition of a new methodical knowledge and in order to determine the practical areas that will require further research.
